Commissioned by Jim Dragovitch, director of the GW Hewlett HS Jazz Ens., this 16 bar tune features a unison melody carried by the trombones & tenors and plenty of Full Ens with short stop time before the solo sections. The head, based on "Doxy" changes is followed by solos on 12 bars Bb Blues chords and a solid 12 bars of Full Ens before the head returns. MED TEMPO JAZZ in Bb

"Funky Scrooge" has a hip smooth jazz feel to it while retaining strong funk elements. The opening line features a Trumpet, Alto and Tenor unison followed by added horns with some simple background figures. The solo sections is based on (1) chord making solos readily accesible by many of you students. You students will dig this chart.

Written in the style of Sammy Nestico and the Count Basie Orchestra this composition captures the feel and excitement of the Basie band with limited brass ranges at a Grade 3 Level. A pleasing melody set as a ROCK BALLAD features short melodic solis for the saxophone section and trombone section and written melody solos for piano, tenor sax and trumpet.

Stylistically similar to a Spyor Detective Thriller movie theme, this ROCK chart will please the your younger bands and audiences alike. Both the melody and solo changes are based on one chord (F7) to allow the inexperienced soloist to stretch out.

This simple LATIN based tune written in mostly unision, octaves, counterpoint and block harmonies. This chart will rehearse quickly and sound full with little problem. Solos are written out for tenor and trumpet but may be opened for other soloists.

"Effective Etudes" has become one of the best selling Jazz Etude books on the market. These Etudes are graded studies written from grades 3-6. All etudes contain annotations which explain the harmonic and melodic aspects of each phrase. "The Farewell" is the third part of Thad's "Suite for Pops" completed in 1973 and recorded for the first time in 1975. This movement reflects the joyous retreat associated with funerals typical in Louis Armstrong's home town of New Orleans. Adjustments made to this Thad gem make it a very playable addition to the catalogue. The written trombone solo section may be opened up for additional soloists followed by plenty of exciting ensemble for the whole band to sink their teeth into. "Who Me" is one of the best scorings of the blues you are likely to hear. Originally scored in Bb concert, this re-scoring a fourth lower to F contains all of the skillfully penned structure written for the Count Basie band by Frank Foster in the early 60's. The high note trumpet at the end may be omitted, played as written, improvised or with the Opt. lower notes provided. Written solos. (Scored to sound complete with 4-3-2-3)

"US" is a wonderful Gospel/Rock composition a perfect 4th below Thad's to making it accessible to younger players. Thad utilized the "a cappella" brass soli, supported by the saxes in this arrangement, producing a solid funk/rock/gospel piece that students and parents will both enjoy. Interestingly, this is one of the few big band charts Thad wrote without solo space. (Scored to sound complete with 4-3-2-3)

"Second Race" once again shows Thad's attention to form. Constructed to highlight the tenor sax solo, yet perfectly setting up the two ensemble choruses which follow. Thad has once again created a masterpiece from the time honored blues in F major. One of the countries leading educational writers for jazz ens., chorus, concert band and orchestra, has written a "hip hop" piece at an easy level that kids should really dig. Ranges are moderate (check the lead parts on the web site) with optional higher notes if you have the horses. Written solos.

"Sin Palabras" (Without Words) was written for Rich's "Bad Little Big Band" and was perfectly suited to be re-scored for full jazz ensemble. Rich did a wonderful job making it playable for the educational marketplace. The relaxed Latin style will be a pleasant addition to any concert program. All high notes on the recording are optional and all solos are written out.

"Funky Jeans" is a funk style blues in C concert. Written in a "Thaddian" style, this original tune features some creative ensemble writing and sounds more difficult than it is to play. The funky groove will make this an instant hit with your students. (Scored to sound complete with 4-3-2-3)

This original even eighth ballad is written to allow multiple soloists. By leaving out the appropriate section part and substituting the Opt. Solo part, you can feature Alto, Trumpet, Tenor, Trombone, Guitar, Flute or even piano as the featured soloist. Talk about a high energy, happy Funky/Hip Hop that sounds much harder that the written parts, well this is it. Simple, contemporary changes make solos a breeze and place this piece in the "must have" category. Features a three horn Alto, Tenor, Trumpet melody to start.

This extended blues form shifts from a Swing Shuffle to a Funk bridge then back again. Lots of excitement, easy changes to blow on with a chance to open for more solos, if desired. Optional lead trumpet notes save chops but won't take the energy away from this chart.

"Mongo's Mood" is a hip Samba with firm roots in both the Blues and Salsa. Chris had done a great job in keeping this at a reasonable playing level while still being quite hip. This one should fit perfectly into your balanced programming format.

As the only vocal selection in our catalogue, we have chosen this swinging blues arranged by Duke Ellington expert Dave Berger. Written for Dave's "Sultans of Swing Big Band", "Busy Woman Blues" captures the essence of the blues that allows for individual vocal interpretation by your male or female vocalist.

This swingin' minor blues features a unison sax melody and plenty of call & response between brass and saxes. A simple but effective shout chorus leads back to the head harmonized this time for saxes. Solo sections can be opened up and it this charts ends with a spot for your drummer.

Has the feel of L'il Darlin' but quite different melodically and harmonically. Piano solo in the middle and a nice short shout section at the end. Easy to play and very smooth.
