The Smart Chart Music Jazz Ensemble Catalog features three series' of charts offering a full range of learning opportunities for the developing jazz musician. From easier charts in the Getting Hip Series to the more difficult original charts in the Independent Composers Series, you'll find great writing in many different styles including funk, swing, R&B, salsa and other Latin styles. You can also choose titles from the Famous Composers Series which focuses on the music of Thad Jones - scored to make it more accessible to the young or developing musician.
All charts are scored as follows:
Piano voicings and bass lines are completely written out.
Brass and sax ranges are carefully edited. Optional lower notes are always provided.
In most cases written solos are included.
All charts have been play-tested by students prior to publication.
Charts
in the Getting Hip and Famous Composer Series' are scored for: 5 saxes, 8 brass, and 4 rhythm but will sound complete with 4 saxes (AATB), 3 trumpets, 2 trombones and 3 rhythm.
Optional flute parts are provided with each chart.

Effective Etudes for Jazz

"Effective Etudes" has become one of the best selling Jazz Etude books on the market. The etudes are based on some of the great standards and jazz tunes; When You're Smiling, Moonglow, Perdido, Pennies From Heaven, How High The Moon, I've Got Rhythm, What Is This Thing Called Love, Blues in Bb, Blues in F and many more. These Etudes are graded studies written from grades 3-6. All etudes contain annotations which explain the harmonic and melodic aspects of each phrase. In addition, a chord chart placed above each etude will help students understand the melodic and harmonic relationship to the chords.
Books contain CD's tracks with rhythm section accompaniment and tracks with a soloist performing the written etude in each of the books. Great for classroom unison studies or individual practice.
